 Service life of many metal parts can be extended through shot peening, a process that involves bombarding the surface of a part with small spheres of uniform size and hardness. Shot peening creates a uniform layer of compressive stress on the surface of the part which acts to combat stress cracks and corrosion. These stress cracks can result from manufacturing processes such as machining, grinding, and welding.
